Chocolate Scent Enhances Workout Performance by Reducing Perceived Exertion

A recent study indicates that the aroma of chocolate can help individuals complete more exercise reps while feeling less fatigued, with differing effects from dark and milk chocolate.

A study published in Frontiers in Physiology highlights an unexpected ally for enhancing workout performance: the smell of chocolate. Research shows that exposure to chocolate scents before and during resistance training helped participants, particularly men with moderate fitness levels, accomplish more repetitions without increasing their sense of effort.

Dr. Mohamed Nashrudin bin Naharudin, the study's lead author and assistant professor at the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Malaya, notes, "Exposing moderately trained men to chocolate odors right before and between sets significantly increased their overall training volume without increasing perceived exertion." This finding underscores a fascinating interaction between aroma and exercise performance.

The research involved 23 healthy males in their early to mid-20s who were moderately trained. Participants were divided into three groups, each exposed to different scents: liquified 90% dark chocolate, liquified 60% milk chocolate, or plain water for a control. Participants had fasted for at least 10 hours prior to engaging in leg extensions, which involve straightening the lower legs against a weight.

Before they started exercising, researchers measured the participants’ performance and assessed their hunger, fullness, desire to eat, and intentions to eat shortly afterward. During the workout, they also tracked hunger levels and appetite after each 30-second exposure to the different scents.

Interestingly, the two chocolate scents had distinct influences on appetite. The 90% dark chocolate aroma was linked to lower hunger, reduced desire to eat, and increased feelings of fullness, suggesting a decrease in appetite before exercise. Conversely, while the smell of 60% milk chocolate was rated as more pleasant, it did not significantly alter participants' hunger or appetite levels.

More significantly, the study revealed how these aromas could impact exercise volume. Participants exposed to the dark chocolate scent managed to execute approximately 18 more repetitions in leg extensions compared to the control group, while the milk chocolate aroma led to an increase of about nine additional repetitions.

The researchers theorize that these effects may stem from learned associations people develop over time with particular food scents. Familiar aromas can evoke expectations, prompting psychological responses that mimic the sensations associated with eating, even without actual food intake.

"The dark chocolate scent serves as a cue for a rich, bitter, and satisfying food, tricking the body into a state of anticipated fullness," Dr. Nashrudin explained. "On the other hand, the milk chocolate scent seems to work more as a reward cue, enhancing workout volume by creating a positive sensory environment rather than affecting basic hunger signals."

This study raises intriguing questions about the ability of food scents to trigger responses akin to those produced by actual consumption. Notably, the research was conducted on fasting individuals, suggesting that environmental cues can elicit physiological and psychological responses aligned with food intake without direct consumption.

While the study's conclusions are compelling, the authors caution against overreaching. They did not measure hormone levels or neural activity, leaving the precise biological mechanisms behind these changes speculative. Additional limitations included potential inconsistencies in scent intensity and the possibility that participants might recognize the control condition due to its lack of aroma.

The small sample size also raises questions about the generalizability of the findings, as the study focused solely on young, moderately trained males. Future research with larger and more diverse populations will be crucial for expanding our understanding of these phenomena.

Another intriguing aspect remains unanswered: whether chocolate possesses unique properties that yield these outcomes or if other familiar food scents could evoke similar responses. Dr. Nashrudin suggests that while chocolate has powerful associations with reward, other foods might also trigger psychological shifts in appetite that enhance performance. "What’s important is that the odor should be familiar and enticing to effectively elicit the necessary appetite changes for performance gains," he concluded.
